How to Prevent Windows 11 from Installing Your Device Drivers

Windows 11 can automatically download and install device drivers through Windows Update. While this is convenient for most users, it can sometimes cause problems—especially when Windows replaces a driver that is working perfectly with a different version.

If you prefer to control your drivers manually, here are some simple ways to prevent Windows 11 from automatically installing them.

Method 1: Change Device Installation Settings

This is one of the easiest methods.

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Open the Hardware tab.
  4. Click Device Installation Settings.
  5. Select No (your device might not work as expected).
  6. Click Save Changes and then OK.

Windows should now stop automatically downloading manufacturer apps and custom drivers through this setting.

Method 2: Use Group Policy Editor

If you're using Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, you can use Group Policy.

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to:

Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update → Manage updates offered from Windows Update

  1. Open Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
  2. Select Enabled.
  3. Click Apply and then OK.

After restarting your PC, Windows Update should no longer include device drivers with its updates.

Method 3: Hide a Problematic Driver

If Windows keeps reinstalling a particular driver, you can hide that driver update so Windows Update doesn't offer it again. Microsoft provides troubleshooting tools that can help prevent specific updates from being installed.

This can be especially useful when a newer driver causes compatibility or performance problems.

Automatically updated drivers can be useful, but they aren't always the best choice for every computer. If you need a specific graphics, audio, network, or chipset driver version, preventing Windows 11 from replacing it automatically gives you greater control over your system.
